What's It Gonna Be?

I love watching Jay play by himself. I love watching his little mind work and I LOVE trying to figure out what he is thinking.

I have two sets of pictures of him doing things, and I love them both. I know, picture overload, but seriously, these are hilarious to me! It's amazing the things kids will do when you just let them be. It's also incredible to me to see what a little boy he is becoming. Ahhh! Where did my baby go?!  Disclaimer- all photos are blurry due to the iPhone. The second set is REALLY blurry because I was behind him making sure he wasn't going to fall down with my right hand and trying to take a picture with my left hand, all while on the phone with my little sister Michelle. Phew!

I caught this last night while we were all in the playroom after dinner. I just wonder what's going through that little (and I mean little- remember his stats?) head of his??

This is a pretty good book, but...

I need new reading material. Or do I? Can't decide...

Hmmm... What to read? What to read?

There it is! My monster book!
And there is my Daddy peeking in on me after Mommy called him in!

Yeah, Mom... I see you taking pictures of me now...
Sheesh, can't a guy get a little privacy?!

And here are the next few from tonight... These CRACK me up! I was in the kitchen cooking dinner and Jay was playing in the fridge. He loves to take out the mustard and suck the cap. Gross, I know. After stirring the noodles, I looked at him and saw this...

Hmmmm... Sierra Mist?! I LOVE Sierra Mist!
(he really does, sadly)
And see the mustard on the ground under him?

(PS, it's closed)

Close up!

I think one of my favorite parts is how he is standing on the bottom of the fridge. He climbed up on the little step, grabbed himself a cold one, and went to town!

I seriously LOVE this boy!!!!

What We've Been Up To

First of all, THANK YOU to those of you who gave me advice on weaning! I got some GREAT ideas and some peace of mind for sure! I have some ideas to try for introducing milk, and I'm excited to get started when I finally am able to!

In other news... here are a couple of pictures showing what we have been up to lately...  :)

Learning how to be a big boy...

Climbing stairs...

Riding Tex like a bull...

Playing naked with a box...
(look at him sitting on his foot. SO precious!)

Napping with Daddy...

Seeing Auntie Michelle for the first time since DECEMBER!!

And a video that makes me laugh every time....

Hope you had a great Memorial Day weekend! I forgot my camera so I have no pics  :(

Need Your Help!

Ok, this post is for all you breastfeeding moms....

Tell me about weaning! How/when/etc...?? There are just no guidelines about this, and it makes it that much more confusing!

Here is what I'm working with...

Jay doesn't take breastmilk or formula out of a cup/bottle/anything... So right now I am nursing him 4-5 times a day. He is seeming a little less interested in the feeding, and is DEFINITELY still hungry afterwards. I know a big part of the nursing right now is comfort. I am in NO hurry to wean him at this point, but I was planning on nursing him until about a year (give or take a month or two)...

Here's my issue... We are going out of town for four days when Jay is 11 months old. Since he won't take breastmilk or formula from a cup or bottle, I talked to my pediatrician about this and he said I could introduce milk a little early. Our ped told us that Jay won't starve over the time we are gone. He also said Jay might not take to milk at all, and that's ok. He said some babies just DON'T take milk (supplementing with yogurt, etc... is necessary).

Anyway, so that's where I stand. I'm totally stressing out about our trip. If I can be assured that Jay will be fine over the four days we're gone, then I don't care AT ALL. But I'm still curious how it worked for you guys...

The great thing is that I have NO DOUBT that if something horrible happened to me right now, Jay would be fine. He would either take formula/milk or eat solids. He has gone about 8 hours between breastfeedings during the day (longer at night of course) and been 100% fine. This is because he's SO good at eating solids. Which is a BLESSING. So, I agree with our pediatrician with the fact that Jay will NOT starve while we are gone. I'm still just kind of nervous...

If you don't want to comment, my email is courtneysquillante@gmail.com

Thanks in advance!  :)

The Beach!

Our little family went to the beach (or nasty Galveston as I like to call it) this past weekend! My best friend Courtney and her family went the weekend before, and we thought it was a GREAT idea to take Jay! I wasn't sure how he would react, but we decided to go for it...

And I'm SOOOOO glad we did! He freakin' LOVED it! Like seriously- love love loved it! He had so much fun and seriously didn't stop smiling/clapping/laughing/crawling the entire time.

This kid LOVED the sand. He discovered it by picking it up and feeling it and throwing it. He tried to eat it only once- I was pretty impressed.

Anthony took Jay out in the water to play in the waves. It's a well known fact with my friends and family that I don't go in water that I can't see through. There are creepy crawly things that touch me and I do NOT like it one bit! Seriously, the pool is my favorite and I love going into clear blue beach water. But lakes and Galveston (brown water)- NO THANK YOU. It was a HUGE sign of love for me to even go knee deep in it today to take pictures of my child. Ick. Anyway, back to the story.... Anthony took Jay out and they had so much fun together. Anthony is SUCH a great daddy... I just love watching my two guys play... Ahhh...

Jay sat in the shallow waves and they just came at him- and he LOVED it! Even when they crashed in his face he signed/said MORE! It was precious!!

We thought he might need a break from the water, so we took him back up to our towels to drink some water and rest. Rest? Right! Not this kid! He just played with his "pootbaw" all over the place! This boy NEVER stops...

And to make sure there was photographic evidence that Mommy was there, Daddy snapped two pictures with Mommy's phone... :)

We had a WONDERFUL family day together and I'm so glad we went! Here is a video of our crazy kid having a BLAST! If you watch it (it's short- only about a minute and a half), turn your volume down... the wind was really strong!

9 Months!

Our 9 Month Check Up went great! Jay is a happy and healthy little boy and there were no shots so it was even better!  :)

STATS are:
30 inches tall (94%)
20 lbs 5 oz (49%)
46% for head- I don't remember the measurement

So basically he is just the same as he's been all along... tall, lean, and has a small head  :)

Some things I want to remember about Jay at 9 Months...

-Still loves being bounced/sung to sleep. Each night I hold him and he puts his head on my shoulder and I bounce and sing him to sleep. He "sings" right along with me... Humming until he's asleep. Sweetest sound ever. Not to mention putting him down is one of my most favorite things in the world. I love it.
-Nurses 4-5 times a day and unless he is holding something in his hands to play with, he is ALL over the place. I call it Olympic Eating- he doesn't stay still unless he has something to play with!
-Eats every 2 hours. If it's not time to nurse, then he eats solids- usually people food. He's pretty much over any kind of baby food. It makes it a LITTLE challenging trying to find foods that are soft enough for a guy with only two teeth.
-Sleeps like a champ unless he's teething (or sick). He still only needs about 10 1/2 hours of sleep a night. He naps like a pro, too!
-Is up for about three hours between naps/sleeping. Like clockwork. Then takes a 1-2 hour nap each time. Awesome break for mommy during the day!
-LOVES to play with his pets and laughs at them all the time.
-Listens and follows directions pretty well. If we say "Where is ____?" he will crawl over to it and pat pat it. It's pretty awesome!
-Still loves every kind of ball imaginable! Seriously- he's totally obsessed. Like for real.
-Throws temper tantrums if I try to "distract" him from what he wants or where he wants to go! What?! I thought this didn't start for a while longer!
-Loves Gymboree but hates the group time at the beginning. It's kind of slow and he's a little ahead of what they do in the beginning, so he just tries to crawl away and play somewhere else. He LOVES the group part at the end with the parachute and bubbles, though! And playing in the middle is his favorite!
-Wearing 9 month clothes, size 3 diapers.
-Loves bath time and splashes a lot! He also likes the baby pool and does the same!
-Seriously loves his cousins and grandparents and aunties and uncles. Every time he sees any of them his face just lights up! He is a little homebody!
-Is just talking up a storm. He can sign for more and all finished, and he understands just about every other sign we throw at him. But now he's saying ball, pat pat, more, mama, dada, bye bye and echoes EVERYTHING we say! My favorite is when he tries to say football. It comes out "pootbaw". SOOOO cute!  :)
-Has 2 teeth and is working on his top left.
-Has JUST started standing on his own for about 2-3 seconds. He crawls FAST and pulls up on EVERYthing. Dog included. He cruises on furniture and behind toys. Just starting to walk holding onto our hands.
-Laughs A LOT. I love that sound.
-Loves to hear singing. His favorite songs are "Three Little Ducks", "Where is Thumbkin?", "Pat the Bible", and "The Wheels on the Bus". These songs garner a smile EVERY time. He loves to listen to singing at any point though. He loves church and Glee and American Idol. The Voice comes on too late for him... I know he'd love it ;)
-Is FINALLY starting to love to read. You don't know how happy that makes this former teacher!
-Loves swinging and playing outside. He still only bear crawls on the concrete and grass though. So funny!
-Is still shy in big groups. He definitely gets this from his Daddy. He is very reserved and quiet in environments that are unfamiliar and with people he doesn't know.
-Still gives the best open mouth kisses  :)
-Loves drinking out of a straw and is so good at it!

I know there is so much more about our little man that I'm forgetting. But that's it in a nutshell! It's really hard to believe that we have known him OUTside of my belly as long as we knew him INside my belly!

Jay, we love you more than we could have ever imagined loving anything. You are the absolute light of our world. Thank you Lord for our sweet baby boy. I can't even begin to explain how big my heart swells with this child.

A New Way to Ride

In my last post I mentioned how Jay was/can be a tough baby...

From Day 1 he HATED riding in his car seat through the grocery store. When he was finally able, I sat him up in the cart and he was happy for a while...

Back in January...

He's TOTALLY over that now. He will just fuss and cry and want me to pick him up and hold him. And that's tough to push the cart and carry a big ol' baby around (not to mention getting any shopping done!).

So, I have started letting him stand in the cart. Usually he starts out sitting with his back against my chest on the handle bar. But after a few seconds, he pops up and stands holding on to the rail. He must feel like he is flying! I finally was able to snap a few shots today of this new way to ride!

Ahhhh... I LOVE this kid! :)

Can I just say how disappointed I am in this season's American Idol?? It's SOOOOO boring! Don't get me wrong- I think the talent is phenomenal this year. And I love the judges! Seriously, they crack me up. But put it all together and it's BORING. I miss the controversial comments from Simon. The bickering between him and Ryan. I miss FUN contestants... Ugh... I'm so over it. Well, not over it enough to stop watching of course  :)     Lauren Alaina is just phenomenal! And I was SO bummed about James Durbin. He was amazing. And Pia too. I think Scotty is fantastic, but I'm not over the moon with him. And I can't STAND Haley. Ugh... she just annoys me to no end. Maybe because she always argues with the judges. Blech....

Anyway, since AI is boring, I need to get my singing fix from somewhere else. And we are OBSESSED with The Voice. Seriously. Obsessed. The judges are awesome, the talent is great, and I might SLIGHTLY have a crush on Javier Colon. He is SO good. I could listen to him sing ALL DAY LONG. Ahhhh....

Alright, I have no other material for today. I just needed to talk about my TV obsessions... Because those are the things that are important now to a stay at home mom. Lame, I know....

PS- I'm SO not excited for the Bachelorette on Monday. Ashley kills me. And it looks like the guys are even worse. But I'll still watch it. Let's be honest...

Two of Each

So I thought today I could post two things I'm proud of and two things I'm NOT proud of....

Two Things I'm Proud Of:

1) We have eaten a family dinner at the dinner table with no TV, no phones, NOTHING but our own little company for two straight weeks! Go us! This was SO important to me and I know we will continue. I grew up doing this and it's always been a priority for us. Jay eats the same food as us and it's great for him, too!

We have been putting it off because it's just easier to sit at the coffee table and eat in front of the TV. I said we'd do it at six months... Well, here we are at almost 9. I figure better late than never, right??

2) I did my first baby bootcamp today! It TOTALLY kicked my butt and I will be crazy sore tomorrow, but I needed something to get my rear in gear! I've been running for about 6 weeks and I'm not seeing the results I want. So I figured it was time and I'm SO glad I went!

Two Things I'm NOT Proud Of:

1) Jay's new favorite place to play... Yikes!

2) I have not finished baby proofing yet... Oops... :)

I figured since I had two of each they canceled each other out, right???   :)

Sit. Stay. Let me steal your ball.

It amazes me everyday what a good dog Tex is. Ever since Jay came around, Tex has definitely taken the back seat. I feel so guilty about it, but when you have to choose, let's be honest....

Tex is probably Jay's very favorite thing in the world. Tex can ALWAYS get a laugh out of Jay. Wherever Jay is, there is Tex, and vice versa. I know they will be the BEST of friends one day- it's already developing!

Tex just lets Jay climb ALL over him! Jay rides him like a horse, uses him as a step stool to climb on tall things, uses his fur to pull up, inspects his teeth/mouth/whiskers constantly, and steals everything that ever goes in Tex's mouth. Tex is SO patient with him and just lays there and lets Jay have his way! What a GOOD dog!

I snapped this little series today- and I just love how it shows what happens in a normal day around here. I couldn't imagine having a better "big brother" for Jay....

Yummy Recipes

So I have two new recipes that I have been wanting to share. They both involve almonds, which I'm not a big fan of, but these are both YUMMY (and crazy easy!).

Baked Tilapia with Almond Crust
4-5 Tilapia Filets
2-3 C crushed saltine crackers
1/2 C finely chopped toasted almonds (I actually used pecans in this one- yum!)
2 tsp ground thyme
1 tsp ground parsley
1/2 tsp pepper
1/2 C milk
lemon juice
parmesan cheese

Combine cracker crumbs, almonds, thyme, parsley, and pepper in a big ziploc bag. Place milk in shallow dish. Dip each fish filet in milk then in cracker mixture. Put each in greased casserole dish. Drizzle lemon juice over filets and sprinkle with parmesan cheese. Bake at 400 for about 20 minutes.

Almond Chicken and Rice
4 boneless chicken breasts
1/2 C butter
1/4 C chopped onion
2 Tbsp flour
1 3/4 C chicken broth
1/2 C half and half
1/4 C slivered toasted almonds
3 C cooked, hot rice (I use brown rice, but you can use white)

Melt butter in skillet and brown chicken. Remove chicken and add onions and saute. Add flour, salt and pepper, and stir- don't brown. Add chicken broth gradually then half and half. Stir until thickened. Add almonds. Serve chicken over rice and pour sauce over it all.

Hope you enjoy! :)

The Memory Fades

I read a friend's blog recently who has a newborn little boy. She was describing how tough things are right now- sleeping in few hour increments, a baby that only wants to be held to sleep, and a newborn that screams all the time.

I had a FLOOD of emotions- I remember those days like they were yesterday. And it makes me SHUDDER to think of them. Jay was a HARD newborn. I mean, really really hard. He would seriously NOT sleep laying down for the first two weeks of his life- I mean EVER. Anthony and I took turns holding him and sleeping in the glider/recliner all night long. During the day while he napped I would hold him. That went on for almost four weeks. I vividly remember the day he took a twenty minute nap in his swing. I cried I was so happy! I also remember asking the meals that were being delivered to us to stop because all Jay did all day long was scream. I was so embarassed that I had a screaming baby when others had these sweet newborns that just slept all day. It was also so hard because when I couldn't get Jay to stop screaming, I would just cry right along with him. Such raw, tough, emotions...

Those beginning weeks were tough. And Jay has not proven to be the easiest baby overall. He still cries every Sunday when I leave him in the nursery or Bible class. He still fusses and clings to me when people he doesn't know try to hold him. He still refuses any type of formula or breastmilk out of  cup/bottle/anything else. He still only sleeps about 9 straight hours (then gets fed and goes back to sleep for a few more).

But I love it. I love everything about that boy. All of those times have made me stronger. It has made me appreciate the good days so much more.

But I DON'T miss having a newborn. At all. Those first five weeks were HARD. They were the some of the toughest of my life. It tested me. It tested my marriage (no really- try having a ridiculously high needs baby and no sleep and major hormones. If you can get through that you can get through anything!). But the great thing is- we made it through. And the memories of how hard it was have faded. They are still there, but they've faded. I think God does that on purpose. How else would anyone want to procreate??

Anthony has been wanting another baby for a while now (seriously when Jay was three weeks old he asked when we should start thinking about the next one...). I am not ready. I know I'm not. Not only does the thought of a newborn scare me to death, but I'm not ready to give up my time with Jay.

I LOVE spending time with that boy. I love that he's my little buddy. I love that we have little jokes that no one else gets. And I LOVE that when I get hugs/kisses/smiles from him nothing else in the whole world matters. I know that I will love my next baby this much, but I'm not ready to spread that love. And I'm not ready for the tough newborn times.

I figure once the hard memories fade far enough away, that's God's way of letting me know it's time. Until then...

For the new moms or moms-to-be out there- you WILL get through the hard times. I promise! It's a temporary strain on you- but it IS temporary. Just pray hard and keep looking ahead. In the meantime, snuggle that new baby- they won't let you do it forever!  :)

Bye Bye and Mother's Day

Jay has started talking up a storm lately!! I can't believe it! Just over the last week he has gone from saying just Ma-Ma/Da-Da to "pat pat", "ball", "more", and "bye bye."  I absolutely LOVE hearing his precious little voice and watching his eyes light up when he says something and gets the reaction he wants!

I caught this video of him saying bye bye on Saturday! It honestly just MELTS my heart listening to him talk!

My first Mother's Day was great this year. I woke up to sweet cards from Anthony and Jay and then had a great morning with breakfast and then church. A little shopping trip (alone!!!) and then lunch at a new YUMMY place (BRC) with my parents. We headed to see MeeMaw after that and then all came home and took a fantastic nap!

We went for a nice long walk, played in the park, and then had my favorite pizza for dinner. Jay ate some baby food before our dinner, but he MUCH prefers to eat whatever we are eating. Here he is chowing DOWN on a piece of pizza. Remember, this kid only has TWO teeth. He ate the entire piece- crust and all! I'm in serious trouble when this guy becomes a teenager! :)

Today topped off a really wonderful weekend. It was so GREAT to go to sleep Friday night feeling a teeny bit better from my stomach bug, and then wake up Saturday and not have the urge to run to the bathroom. I continuously got better over the weekend! Yay! That was a LONG five days....

I know that I am so lucky to be celebrating Mother's Day. There are so many out there who have been trying to get pregnant for some time now, or those who have lost their babies. I can only imagine how difficult this holiday must be for you, so please know that I have been praying for you all weekend. Praying for comfort for you and for the path you are meant to take to be shown to you. I am so lucky to have been able to celebrate the wonderful mothers around me- and those include the ones are mommies to dogs and cats! They need moms too!  :)

Hope your weekend was as great as mine!

Oh- and some of you have asked....   You will notice in a lot of Jay's nakedy pictures (like the ones above) his bulging belly button. He has a hernia that he was born with. The pediatricians said it was a hernia that SHOULD repair itself by two years of age. If it's not fixed by then we will be refered to a surgeon who can then surgically correct it. It doesn't bother him at all- which is great! Some think it's just a big outy (sp?), but it's not... Hope that answers any questions...  :)

Pat the Bible

Jay's Bible class on Sundays is fabulous! His teachers are amazing and so so so caring! They do such a great job keeping the kids entertained all while teaching about God, Jesus, and the Bible.

One of Jay's FAVORITE songs is the "Pat the Bible" song. He loves this because it's something he can actually do  :)    From very early on we have always taught him to "pat" things- the dog, the cat, the ball, the table, the floor, etc... Now that he gets to pat the Bible they give him- he's a champ!

Here is Jay patting (and "reading") the Bible at home! I love watching his sweet little hands and I LOVE that he is "learning" about the Bible! You can never start too early!  :)

PS- Sorry for my singing  :)
PPS- Sorry for the ridiculous amount of quotes I used today... WOW
PPSS (is that the next sequence??)- This video was from last week. I need to get one of him from this past week- he now says "Pa Pa" as he pats things! So cute!!

Four days of laying down and LOTS of ginger ale later... Still sick. Where did this stomach bug come from?!

I didn't eat more than a handful of crackers and a piece of toast for three days (lost a few pounds though-score!). I ate dinner tonight because I was feeling SLIGHTLY better. FAIL. Now it's 11:30 and I can't sleep because I feel so YUCKY. Ugh....

Let me just tell you- it's HARD work being a mom and being sick. There is no "day off" to lay in bed and recover. I can't call in sick and feel sorry for myself. And to be honest, husbands just don't get it. Anthony thinks he's helping, but God love him, it's just not enough.

Oh, and in case you are still wondering. Two pregnancy tests later and it's still a negative. So don't worry...  Because I was.  :)

Ok, that is my poor me blog post. I promise there will be more next week. Life just doesn't give you much to blog about when you aren't feeling well...

It's Official!

Jay officially said his FIRST word (other than mama and dada). EVERY time he sees a ball he says BA. EVERY time.

It's no secret that this kid is obsessed with all kinds of balls- ball pit balls, bouncy balls, sports balls, even the fake red "balls" (the big concrete ones) outside of Target. And no joke- every time he passes one he says BA.

On another note his second tooth came through the other day. I love teething :)

And finally, I've been nauseous for two days. Don't get your hopes up- I'm not pregnant. Just feeling VERY VERY yucky. And apparently there is only ONE medicine you can take while nursing! Argh.... So ready for this to be over...

Funny story for ya...

Friday night Anthony, Jay, and I went to dinner with my parents. We met them at a new little Italian place near us.

Jay did great during dinner- sat in his high chair some, got passed around from person to person, and then ate some dinner from his high chair. He finished and wanted to get out, so I picked him up out of his chair and handed him to Anthony. I was so bummed because I noticed there was a TON of food all over his lap. Then, I really noticed.

It was poop. Everywhere. All over his clothes, all over the high chair, all over the floor. Anthony freaked out and pushed him away and said, "Ugh! Poop?! I don't want it all over ME!" (thanks Dad!) so I grabbed him and the diaper bag and zoomed outside (all the while getting poop all over ME- it's just what a mother does). My mom came with me and I changed him in the back of my car. I wiped down every last inch of his little body and threw all of his stuff in a plastic bag that I had in the back (so much for those returns...). Jay thought this was all great and was having a blast! :)

As I went to change his actual diaper, I noticed something interesting... There was HARDLY ANY poop in his diaper! Then it hit me. Guess who changed him before we left for dinner? That's right. Anthony. The thoughts that went through my head sounded something like this.... "alkjasdofiuwerdfakjs;dkfjc;sdoivuoiueawkrj"

Hope your Friday night entertainment was much cleaner than mine.   :)
