Love Being a Roadrunner

I don't think I've ever taught and not known how many days were left before the next vacation (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring Break, summer...). In fact, last year, I could tell you how many days of school were left starting on the FIRST day...

So a couple weeks ago when someone said, "Wow, you must be excited that there are only 6.5 days of school left"- it hit me like a ton of bricks that I had NO CLUE that two weeks of freedom were so close!! How could I NOT know that we had so few days left?! Then I realized it's because I absolutely LOVE my job! I LOVE my new school, I LOVE my students and parents, and I LOVE my colleagues! This first semester being a Roadrunner (Rummel Creek Roadrunners!) has been one of the biggest blessings in my work career. I absolutely love everything about it. I LOVE that my team is filled with such good teachers that challenge me to be better. I LOVE that the employees are so positive and the school morale is SO HIGH. I LOVE that my students are incredible and want to learn. This has been the most fun semester I have ever had as a teacher.

Not only do all of these things make a great working environment, but add our AMAZING PTA to the mix.... We started off work week at school in August with gifts and gift cards to the teacher supply store. Then they had a breakfast for us. We then each had a take home meal for the first day of school because they knew the teachers would just be too tired to cook that night! WOW! It's been followed up with monthly luncheons, secret pal gifts, Thanksgiving pies, and then a Java Bar last week in the morning. It was AMAZING! Just as I thought we had been spoiled enough, insert classroom holiday parties! I received a wreath of gift cards from all the kids in my class and presents on top of that! This was the first year I didn't have to "put on" the holiday party- the moms took care of that! I actually feel guilty for how they blessed me with gifts- this is something I LOVE doing, and they spoiled me rotten.

I couldn't have created a better job if I handpicked parts myself (well, maybe I would have taken some friends from my old school and added them into the mix!). This has been SUCH a blessing that I know only comes from one place- and He knew all along what I needed.

Anthony and I both went out on a limb and took new jobs in the wake of a huge economic crisis in our country. We put total faith in God that He knew what was best for us- and as we expected, He did! We are both blessed beyond imagination with our new jobs. God works in amazing ways and we are SO THANKFUL for these new paths.

New Chapter

We celebrated our First Stream Christmas Party this weekend- western style at Blanco's! It was SUCH a great time! I know I write this all the time- but God has blessed us SO MUCH with Anthony's job. He works with incredible people that we just couldn't  have picked any better ourselves! All the people there are so wonderful- and so are their spouses! It was so fun meeting all of the people I have heard so much about. Blanco's was a great venue and we had Goode Company BBQ- yum! We look SO FORWARD to the future with this company- we know we have LOTS of wonderful memories to make!

Here is one of the ONLY pics from the party- boo! My camera has had PMS lately- and it's really
annoying!

Before the real party we had Anthony's NEW team over for drinks. It was so fun because I LOVE having people over and I was so excited to get to know everyone a little better! This also gave me a GREAT excuse to get some Christmas decorations that I have been wanting. I wanted some wreaths for the front doors, but I just haven't found anything I really really love. So, I went to Michael's and I made some! These are not professional caliber by any means, but I think they look great and it's exactly what I was going for. I also put together some really cute flower arrangements (in my unbiased opinion of course!) and was SO excited to have them on my mantle with our stockings! I am no Martha Stewart, and I know people can do WAY cooler things, but this was a great start for me and I had SO MUCH fun doing it!

I was reflecting as we had the team over how much fun it will be next year and the next year and all of the years to come. This is a team that Anthony is growing, and it started this Christmas with 4 people- and three more due to start right after the New Year! I can't wait to see what this chapter holds for us- if it continues this path I know we will be happier than we could ever imagine!

Thank you, Sweet Tex. I just LOVE my gift!

Houston Snow Day!

Yes, you read the title right- it snowed in HOUSTON! It actually snowed several inches- enough to cover my car, our roof, and all of our plants! It actually STUCK- which is just about a miracle!

My phone died when the snow really started sticking (of course!), but here are some from the beginning and when it started piling up!

The CHAOS at school when all the kids wanted to play in the snow!

The Hyland Boys playing in the snow

Starting to stick!

At home!! It looks so pretty!

Tex LOVED playing in the snow!!

Tex was MAD that I made him stop playing to sit and
take a picture!!

This was my kind of snow- fun for a day then I was GLAD to see the blue skies and green grass again! :)

Thanksgiving 2K9

We just got back from a WONDERFUL Thanksgiving! We spent it in Alabama with my mom's uncle and aunt. The WHOLE family was able to get together which was an amazing fete in itself! We got to spend some great quality Moriarty Family time- all 14 of us (this is just immediate family of mine)! This was just an incredible blessing that we were so thankful for. Anthony has also never spent Thanksgiving with my family, so this was a first for him, too!

We stayed in the country in West Alabama (Demopolis/Linden to be exact!). We fed cows, shot guns, fished, drove four wheelers, rode horses, and of course had a fire every night. The weather was ABSOLUTELY perfect and the food- well, let's just say I'm pretty sure I gained fifty pounds! Southern cooking at it's FINEST!

Here are some pictures (probably way too many) and I'm sure I'll post more when I get Jenn's pictures!

Happy Birthday, Anthony

Happy Birthday to my WONDERFUL husband, Anthony!

I honestly could not have asked for a better man to be my husband. He is everything I have ever dreamed of in a mate. I thank God everyday for bringing us together and blessing us so greatly.

Happy 28th birthday, honey- I love you more than I can ever explain!

Happy Thanksgiving!

We just wanted to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving!

We have so much to be thankful for this year- we have our health, wonderful families and friends, an incredible church home, and amazing jobs. We are so blessed and so thankful for it all.

We wish all of you a wonderful Thanksgiving from Alabama...

The Blind Side

The next movie you HAVE to see- The Blind Side!

We saw it this weekend, and it has now earned it's place in my Top 5 All Time Favorite Movies. This is an amazing movie with an incredible message (and based on a TRUE story!).

You can see the trailer and information here... http://www.theblindsidemovie.com/

A homeless black kid from the projects (Michael Oher) is taken in as a charity case by an upscale private (all white) school (the "charity" is actually being wanted for his size and athletic ability). As the movie goes along and shows the horrible conditions this poor child is living in, a southern family takes him in and considers him one of their own. As the movie progresses, his intelligence and athletic ability improve tremendously and he becomes a first round NFL draft pick. His new family is there on this enormous day and celebrates and cheers like any other family would.

This is an inspirational story that shows true love really does exist. As I watched I couldn't help but think of my old students and how similar their lives are to this kid- broken family, drug abuse, not seeing or knowing siblings, one set of clothes, sleeping wherever it was warm, being ridiculed by teachers, etc... I could think of specific kids from my past four years of teaching who mirrored this story in one way or another, and it just broke my heart. I honestly believe I did all that I could at the time for those kids, but I can't help wondering where so many of them are today. I can only hope and pray for them, and know that if each of us continue to help one person in a tiny way, what an impact it will make on so many lives.

I highly recommend this movie to EVERYONE- it will melt your heart and make you want to go out and do something good... I PROMISE, you won't be sorry!

PS- Sandra Bullock was AMAZING in the movie! She reminds me of a lot of sassy southern women... This is by far her best movie!

PPS- Get your tissues- I'm pretty sure I cried through 90% of the movie. It's just so touching! Disclaimer- it's not a "tear jerker" movie, I just cry at things like this! :)

Congratulations Michelle!

What an honor!!!

http://www.uil100.org/all-century/volleyball.php

Thanks to everyone who voted... Michelle totally deserves this award!

And I think the Round Top-Carmine people told their entire towns to vote- 5/8 girls on the first team from a 1A school?!!?  Love the small towns, but c'mon... (enough venting!)

Yay for Michelle!

It's Monday!

Oh my gosh, so after complaining of nothing to blog about, I come to school for an hour and already have two hysterical stories!

#1) My kids are spread out all over the room working on spelling words. I hear conversations that are totally off topic 90% of the time, but as long as they are working, I'm ok with that (this is coming from a perpetual talker)... HOWEVER, this morning it's a little different conversation... I overhear a boy say, "My big brother has hair around his privates." I jump up and say, "What did you say??!" He replied, "I said my brother has hair around his privates (now giggling hysterically)." All of a sudden another boy on the OTHER side of the room says, "I bet you never heard THAT at school before."     He is right. Wow.

#2) ANOTHER set of boys working on spelling words (you can always count on boys for good stories) is talking about their words. This particular group of boys are in a lower spelling group- hence they don't read their words very well. One of the boys runs up to me and says, "Mrs. Squillante! One of ****'s spelling words is TURD this week!"  I think- OHMYGOSH- did I type them wrong?! These parents are going to MURDER me! I ask them to bring me the word in question and it is in fact NOT TURD, but TIRED.... ahhhh....

It's 9:15- I think I need more coffee already!

Busy, but not blog-worthy...

Have you ever had one of those weeks (or two in a row to be exact) where you are incredibly busy but for some reason there's nothing of HUGE importance or signifcance going on?

Well, that's been me the last two weeks (ie- nothing to blog about)... Not that there hasn't been wonderfully exciting things going on- Andy came in town, Michelle came in town (neither are boring!), Jill had her first birthday (can't believe she's that old!), Michelle and Scott's sweet friends stayed with us, dinner with Mom and Michelle Monday night, I went to the SHS volleyball game on Tuesday (Stratford, oh Stratford, forever we'll honor you), and we had the Medina Children's Home dinner last night with Auntie Karen and Uncle Steve.

Like I said, I could blog about the little things, but most of the excitement really isn't MY story to blog about... Jill's first birthday- well, that's up to Jenn... Michelle coming in town- that's up to her... Get it? So, while we've been very busy (and very blessed to be busy with such wonderful things and people), I feel pretty lame blogging about stuff that's not mine...

That's all.... I'm tired... Can you tell it's Friday?

Ella's New Friend

Every once in a while Anthony's dad, Andy, gets to come to Houston for business and stay with us. We LOVE having him in town! Tex of course follows him around EVERYWHERE, but he had never met Ella. Well, it was love at first sight for her... I walked through the den last night and this is what I found! Too cute!

GANG-GREEN!

I was actually really looking forward to Halloween this year because Anthony and I had a costume we were really excited about! We dressed up as GANGRENE. Actually, Anthony was a gangster, and I was all green, so we were GANG-GREEN! Disclaimer- we stole this idea from our friend Jill from a LONG time ago! I LOVED this idea and we had so much fun! Anthony is a natural gangster at heart (heehee) and did a great Eminem/Tupac impression. I had a great time in all green and even spray painted my hair! It took four washes at 1:30 am to wash it out, but it finally came out!

We went to Blanco's to see one of my sweet friends Lindsie's husband's band play. They were awesome and it was super fun! We went with Jake and Stacy and then met up with Michelle and Clay when we got there! Here are some funny pics from the night!

Ella LOVES Brett Favre

So I realize that MOST of the country hates Brett Favre, but there are a few out there that still love him- including our kitty...

She LOVES to watch TV- but last night Mr. Favre caught her attention more than usual! I took this picture and I think it's hysterical!

Happy Halloween!!!

Arrrrr Little Pirate!

Sneak Peek of Tex in his Halloween costume!!!!

You might think he is not very happy, but he LOVED it (no, he really HATED it until the treats came out!).... Anyway, this is our little pirate- he even has a parrot on his hat!

I love this boy!  :)

It Worked!

Apparently, NOT rooting for A&M this weekend REALLY helped- we got a HUGE win against those pesky Red Raiders from Lubbock! This is the first time in what feels like an ETERNITY that we beat Tech, and in Lubbock of all places! And we didn't just beat them- we crushed them! So, I will continue to NOT cheer for the Ags in hopes that it helps greatly (OR it might just be due to the fact that we are a bunch of punky freshman that can't decide when to play or when to get our butts kicked... here's hoping for success NEXT season!)....

Anyway, there is actually more that went on over our weekend than just the win, but that W deserved top billing!

Friday night Anthony had a poker tournament for a client- tough work, right? While he was doing that, I went to our Bible Class get together at the Robertsons! We stuffed goodie bags for the kids at Texas Children's which was super fun- nothing like volunteering and getting together with friends! Saturday we continued our "volunteerism" at our chuch carnival. They actually bus kids from our sister church, Impact Church of Christ, over and the Memorial CofC people help out. Anthony and I led a group around which was super fun! Our kids were older, but so respectful and sweet! We had a great time getting to know them. I was EXHAUSTED afterwards though! Here are some pics from the day... We didn't find out it was a "costume" party until the night before... I went as a nurse (thanks for the old scrubs, Andrea and Brenda!), and Anthony went as an Aggie Fan... hahaha

Such a fun weekend giving back! I have a special place in my heart for volunteering- and even to do a TINY bit this weekend made me so happy! I am excited to have more time to do more and more! It was a great starting place...  :)

I Need a New Team!

So, apparently I am bad luck...

ALL of the teams I cheer for really STINK!!!

A&M got blown out of the stadium this weekend by the WORST team in the Big 12!

The Astros- when is the last time they made the post-season??

The Rockets- what happened to TWOSTON?

I had SUCH high hopes for them this year- they are OK, but not great by any means...

So, I decided, let's start cheering for the teams I'm NOT a big fan of. Maybe they will be bad and my teams will start to be good... No? Ehhh, it's worth a shot- Go Yankees, Go Lakers, Go Cowboys, and Hook 'em!
Just kidding- Love you Michelle and Tony!  :)

Little Surprises

One of my VERY favorite things about being a pet owner is having my little buddies follow me ALL OVER the house. I am never alone! I move to the computer room- they follow. I move to the kitchen- guess who's right behind me? I absolutely LOVE this and think it's just precious that they are my little followers. I mean, what do they do all day when I'm gone?

Going along with this title, here are two pictures of the places I found them. In this one, I got out of the shower and found my little surprise! Oh my gosh, it was just the cutest thing ever! I stinkin' love these guys!!!

Here is my next little surprise. I started up the computer to do some stuff yesterday. As it was booting up, I went into the kitchen to get some water. I came back in to login, and this is what I found!

I know I'm kind of a loser about my pets- but I seriously LOVE them! Anyone who knows me understands that I love animals (excluding emus- that's a whole other topic) and kids more than most things in the world. If I could live in a world of animals I think I would be perfectly happy! Remember in Ace Ventura when he comes into the house and sings and all the animals start coming to him?? That is seriously one of my biggest fantasies! hahaha

Ok, enough... It's Friday and I'm tired... Have a wonderful weekend!  :)

Austin County Fair!

Starting my sophomore year of college, a group of friends would always travel to Bellville in October for the Austin County Fair! It's everything you would expect of a small town fair- loads of fun, amazingly horrible food, great people, and awesome country music! I was counting and I'm pretty sure that this is either my 7th or 8th year to go!

Anthony and I took my oldest nephew Jake on Saturday and visited one of my best friends from college Jill. She was SUCH a great hostess and showed us around. We picked the ONE cold day so far to go, and of course, brought no jackets! I was VERY chilly needless to say, but it was super fun anyway. We rode rides (well, I didn't, but Jake and sweet Uncle Tony did), ate delicious food, and visited all the livestock- gotta love cow smells! We also saw the Baby Chicks (thought of you Tina!) and Jake was VERY upset he couldn't bring a baby duck home! His mother would have KILLED me!

It was a really fun time and I took a few pics to capture the night!

Anthony and Jake waiting in line for their ride!

What a good uncle! hahaha

Sweet Jill and me!

Jake and me

We had so much fun! Thanks Jill for showing us around, thanks Jenn for lending your kid, and thanks Tony for being a good sport! :)

Radio Star!

So this afternoon, Anthony was a featured speaker on the local CNN Better Business Bureau focusing on real estate. They had him as a "leader in the commercial real estate business." He did GREAT!!! I only found out what station he was on about twenty minutes before he went on- and this was after much begging from me to find out so I could listen (yes, I'm a proud little wife!!)...

Anyway, I'm so proud of my husband and how well he has done. God has afforded our family such wonderful opportunities and has blessed Anthony with a gift in this business! Way to go honey!  :)

He Protects...

Sweet Tex- I think he was worried little Ella might steal his bone in the middle of the night. This is how he fell asleep last night!!

I hope you all have a great weekend! It was Field Trip day today with pouring rain- I'm READY for the three day weekend!!!  :)

What a Weekend!

What a great weekend! But man, I'm exhausted from it!!!

Friday was our school carnival. Being at a new school this year, I wasn't exactly sure what this was going to be like. First of all, the kids were NUTS all day Friday! Holy cow! By 3:00 I was more than happy to release them to the craziness of the fair! And I had a GREAT time hunting down my kids and cracking confetti eggs on their heads- I definitely got more pleasure cracking on particular students... heehee Anyway, it was fun because my parents brought Owen and of course the Hylands were there.

Here is Owen shooting disappearing ink at me!

Poor Jill just out from all the excitement!

As much fun as the festival was, Anthony and I left at 7:30 Friday night to drive to Dallas for the weekend. It only takes about 3 1/2 hours to get to Dallas for us which is bearable- but then getting out to Southlake where his parents live is another hour! Don't get me wrong- we LOOOVE visiting them, but every time we make that drive I try to remember to fly the next time! Anyway, we ended up getting in around 12 Friday night. I'm pretty sure we were asleep in about 15 minutes!

Saturday morning we met the Iveys (Anthony's sister Andrea and her husband Mike) for shopping and lunch. Then we headed back to the house to take the Christmas card picture! It ended up sooo cute! I won't post it and ruin Andy and Brenda's card, but it turned out great!

After the pic, we headed to Arlington for the big A&M/Arkansas game! The new Cowboys Stadium was incredible! I had seen pictures, but they don't do it justice (because of that fact I took none- well, that and the fact that the Aggies STUNK!)... The screen really is THAT BIG... It was pretty awsesome! We tailgated with Anthony's work friends before and several of my friends stopped by... It was a great time even though it started raining!

Here we are outside the stadium... HUGE!

So back to the game- yes we stunk. The end. On a bright note- we sat with Anthony's parents and my best friend Cara and her husband Jarod, so that was at least fun! :)

We left early (in the fourth quarter!) and had to walk what felt like 4 miles to get to our car (we parked so far away because that was the cheapest parking we could find- $25!)... Mind you that we are walking the seemingly 4 miles in the POURING rain... not just drizzles- I mean RAIN! Ugh... We were going to meet some of Anthony's friends afterwards, but due to the fact that we were so awful and now DRENCHED, we headed back to Southlake and fell asleep in our cozy warm DRY clothes! :)

Sunday we got to have breakfast with Ant's parents which was so nice and then drive home in the- yes you guessed it- pouring rain!

It was a fast and furious weekend, but a great one! It was so fun to visit with the Squillantes/Iveys all weekend!! Now if only I could get rested for the rest of this week!  :)

Two Things to Read Today

These are two GREAT things to read today... You will need a box of tissues for the first one... And the second one I cried also (but I would bet three fourths of you won't!)....

The first one is a blog that was sent to me through a friend of a friend of the couple. It is the most touching, heartwrenching story I've ever read. Two Aggies who fell in love. Over the course of their marriage the girl was diagnosed with breast cancer. At some point she finds out she's pregnant (I don't know if she was already diagnosed with the cancer of if she found out later). She delivers the baby three weeks early and their baby Chloe is in the NICU. The week that Chloe comes home, the wife begins having seizures. Within a week of the new baby coming home, the wife dies. The blog is an account from the husband and it is the saddest, but sweetest, thing I have ever read. I encourage all of you to read this story. This is the best story of faith in God that I have ever read.
http://bandssullivan.blogspot.com/

The next one is definitely lighter! It's about the A&M quarterback Jerrod Johnson. It talks about the amazing things he stands for, how he works so hard, and his background. This guy deserves FAR MORE credit than he gets, and this will make you want to cheer for him louder!
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/john_lopez/09/30/jerrod-johnson/

Have a great afternoon!  :)

Too Funny

So I taught my students a song about the Water Cycle. It is to the tune of "If You're Happy and You Know It" and it goes like this:

Water travels in a cycle yes it does
Water travels in a cycle yes it does
It goes up as evaporation
Forms clouds as condensation
Then falls down as precipitation
Yes it does!

So I told my kids if they memorized the song and could sing it to me, I would give them a ticket (we give tickets as rewards in second grade). Yesterday two of my boys told me they wanted to sing the song for me. So they start belting it out. Here is their version:

Water travels in a cycle yes it does

Water travels in a cycle yes it does
It goes up as evaporation
Forms clouds as constipation
Then falls down as precipitation
Yes it does!

I about fell over laughing... But I didn't want to hurt their feelings, so I tried to keep a straight face until they walked away. SOOOO funny!

PS- they DID get their ticket! :)

You Never Knew How Important Your Jaw Was Until...

You couldn't use it anymore!

Oh my! VERY VERY long story short, I woke up one morning and my teeth in the back were not touching anymore. After spending 5 1/2 hours at a TMJ specialist and a RIDICULOUS amount of money, we got my jaw back to ALMOST normal. I would say it's about 90% there. There is still a tiny bit of pain and my teeth don't touch quite as well as they did before, but hey, I'll take what I can get at this point!

I can't even begin to explain how awful it was not being able to eat/chew normally! I got Mexican Food one night- oh  my gosh it was so disappointing! My teeth couldn't chew the chips because they were too thin, and I was just so bummed! They wanted me on a liquid diet but that was NOT happening!

Anyway, thanks SO much to everyone for your prayers for a quick recovery! 5 days after my teeth couldn't touch they were able to touch again! Woohoo!!

That's why there have been minimal updates from me lately- the pain and time I am spending at the dentist is crazy!

Happy Monday!

PS- Can you believe it's almost October?!?

Silly Ella!

My family has had a lot of cats in our time and I just LOVE them! We haven't had a kitten around in a while though, so I had forgotten the CUTE stuff that they do! I love how playful they are, the amount that they snuggle... I had also forgotten all the funny ways they sleep! Oh my gosh, Ella keeps us CRACKING up with the places she lands! I love it! Here are some pictures of her funny spots... Enjoy!

Under the blanket
On my bed with her brother!
All stretched out!
Under the desk with Tex
Covering her eyes!
In the toy basket
On her toy- she woke up as I was taking it!
In my Target bag on my new pants- she has great taste!
My favorite- are you kidding me?!

We are having so much fun with this little girl!  :)
